Triple-Amputee Barbie

So the dog likes Barbie dolls. I can't even bring myself to discuss Ken's fate. Let's just say it wasn't pretty.

This dog stuff is all new to me since I haven't had one for years. My previous dog, Zoie the Akita, was much too dignified to chew anything up. She couldn't be bothered to play with toys- in fact if you threw a ball for her she would simply walk away. Her main concern was finding a sunny spot for napping or worst case scenario, maybe a sandwich to steal.

The dog thing is new enough that the other night I let the dog out in the freezing cold and then promptly forgot I even had a dog. About an hour later I heard some scratching at the back door and still didn't know it was the dog until he stood up at the door, looked me in the eye and begged to come inside.

Marin likes to lead Chase around by his collar and he is usually happy to go with her. Sometimes he's had enough and will try to escape. That's when she likes to close the door to her room and trap Chase, which makes him bark and whine. Which in turn makes Marin cry and yell "He's whistling!" She did that the other day and Chase was desperate to get out, yet again "whistling" and barking.

Me- "You have to let that dog out of your room."
Marin- "But I don't like him out here cuz he isn't coperating!"

Since getting Chase, I now have another list of ridiculous things that I have to tell people not to do. It used to be just the normal stuff like "I told you to stop climbing on the walls!" Now it's really conversations that I never imagined I would be having.

Marin, screaming- "Mommy! Chase ate my fry! Make him spit it out!" Then I have to explain why it's too late for that and why she really wouldn't want to eat it even if I did retrieve it.

Me- "Don't let him eat out of your bowl! He licks his butt!"

Marin responds happily- "He licks me, too!"

Other things have included the following:

Me- "Who left gum out? The dog is now chewing gum!" and my personal favorite "Did you put spaghetti on that dog?"

Yeah, He Could Smell Better Though.....

First of all, I want to share some complaints about daylight savings time. The first day I skipped straight over breakfast and had lunch at 10. I rarely even eat breakfast. There is something very wrong with this time change system when I decide that a fish fillet is a good choice at 10 am. I was making plans for dinner by 3:30 in the afternoon. I’m now officially on the senior’s “early bird special” schedule.

To make matters worse, it took me several days to remember how to reset the clock in my car. As a result I was doing things like leaving the car, walking in the house, noting the time on the stove only to think to myself “fuck, it’s noon again?”

In other news, I adopted a dog. He’s a very nice dog that a rescue group saved from a death sentence at a shelter. The shelter staff had him labeled as dog aggressive since he had barked at other dogs. I don't claim to be an expert but don't all dogs do that? It turns out that not only is he not aggressive but he loves to play with other dogs and kids. It’s not surprising because he is only 18 months old or so.

The guy that was caring for him (Dale) didn’t like the name the rescue group gave him, Baron, so he changed it to Chase. I say that he’s officially Baron Von Chase which sounds very dignified considering the fact that Marin has already been making him wear hats, Little girl hats. He spent five weeks with Dale and has had a fair amount of obedience training. He knows sit, heel, down for starters. He’s also house-trained (YES!)and the girls adore him.

Marin insists that Chase go with her to the potty. She also likes to put his gigantic dog bed right next to her little toddler bed for nap-time. Yesterday afternoon I checked on them only to discover them both sound asleep and Marin had Chase tucked in with a blanket.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all kittens and unicorns. Katie was upset with Chase for sniffing her legs while she was wearing a skirt. Of course, in her defense, he did have his entire head under her skirt. Claire was displeased when Chase licked the piece of pizza in her hand, and then immediately tried to feed it to Marin. Marin is not a fan of dog spit. She gets upset when she picks up the ball to throw for Chase and discovers that it's wet. Marin was most irritated the first night Chase was here. He kept going to the door and whining.

Marin, addressing the whining dog- “Don’t do that! It’s making me annoying!”

Me- “That’s not what’s making you annoying.”

Marin- “He's doing it again! He have a whistle in his mouth!”

Well, I guess I better hurry up and get started on lunch. I just noticed it’s 11 o’clock again.

Marin Tells her First Joke

I must preface this by saying that Marin is two.

Marin- Knock, knock.

Me- Who is it?

Marin- It's me!

Then she laughed and hugged me.

Me- You are so funny. I love you.

Marin- I lub you, too.

The Fly Story

I was talking to my friend Lisa the other night and she told me a funny story. Well, disturbing and funny.

Lisa- Did I ever tell you the story about the guy with the fly?

Me- Uh, no.

Lisa- Well, this was like ten years ago back when I was running the bar up at the motel. I was wearing a cute little dress and like some black tights. I was looking pretty good. Then this guy came in. He was older, probably fifties or so and a business guy. His face was kind of red and he had jowls. He was pretty drunk before I even gave him a drink but he was trying to flirt with me. While he was sitting there at the bar, this fly landed on his face, right on his cheek. It wasn’t just one of those little houseflies though, it was big, almost as big as a horsefly.

Lisa- Anyway, this fly is right on his face and he doesn’t even notice. It’s like his face is numb or something. Then this fly starts walking across his face and he’s still just sitting there trying to flirt.

Me- Why didn’t you tell him or wave it away?

Lisa- I don’t know. I just didn’t. It was so gross and I couldn’t look away. Anyway, this fly is now walking on the side of his face and it makes it’s way to the corner of his mouth. The guy’s mouth is kind of hanging open a little and the fly just walks in. It doesn’t come back out either. He swallowed the fly.

Me- That is disgusting. What did you do?

Lisa- I said I think we’re closing up now because I thought I was going to throw up.

Overheard Today in my House

Marin- I poop. I poop. I poop in my unnerwear.

Spring, etc.

Here is my first flower picture of spring. A couple days after that we had a snowstorm, the day before it was 70 degrees. I would guess that I probably wasn’t the only one that wasn’t prepared. Although, I just might have been the only one in the neighborhood attempting to clear six inches of snow off my windshield with an old brochure. Now I understand why the scraper was invented.

I’m glad that spring is finally here. It was a tough cold/flu season at my house. Marin was evaluated by the ENT and is scheduled for a tonsillectomy next month. Her tonsils are huge and she snores like a long-haul trucker, at least what I imagine they must snore like; since clearly, I’m not an expert on trucker snoring.

Back to Marin and her tonsils though, with her family history of problem tonsils and the airway obstruction, they think it’s best to get them out before she starts with the constant infections that plagued her sisters. Marin has been a pretty healthy child in general. She has had some problems with constipation on a fairly regular basis. Fascinating, I know.

Marin is taking antibiotics right now for the tonsillitis. She has only had antibiotics a couple of times. However, she has had probiotics and glycerin suppositories quite a few times. When I took Marin’s first dose of antibiotics to her we had the following conversation.

Me- “Ok, Marin. Here’s your medicine. You need to take it and it will make you feel better.”

Marin-“What that for? Help me poop?”

And it did. She has pooped and pooped. The wonders of antibiotic therapy.... There is a poopy Webkin in the washer right now as we speak.

Stomach Flu, cont.

The stomach flu is officially over in my house. I got it, too. Here is the sequence of events. Claire got it Sunday, Marin Monday afternoon, and Katie Monday evening. By Wednesday evening I thought I had dodged the bullet. I was especially vigilant when Claire got sick and washed my hands repeatedly. By the time Marin and Katie started throwing up, I still tried to be careful but my surgical scrub was no longer practical and was replaced with the occasional wiping my hands on my pants and calling it good. Mistake.

By Wednesday night I was really sick. I got everyone ready for bed as quickly as possible and climbed into bed. Marin was in her crib right across the hall from my room, talking. Marin tries to say “puke” but says “peek” instead.

Marin- “You peeking, Mommy?”

Me- “Yes.”

Marin- “I peek all day.”

Marin then proceeded to take all of her clothes off. I was too sick to help her but Claire was a good helper and dressed her baby sister for me. The fun continued for hours.

The next day I was still tired and was looking forward to sleeping through the night. Instead, my phone started ringing at 5 AM. I looked and saw that it was William. I decided I should answer since anyone calling at 5 in the morning better have a really good reason. I was able to ascertain that he was at work and had the stomach flu. I don’t remember much of the conversation. Then my phone rang again around 6 AM and it was William again. He thought he needed to go to the hospital.

I arranged for someone to pick William up from work and then my phone rang again. I saw that it was N calling and thought he must be calling to tell me that William was sick.

Me- “Hello?”

N- “Mmmmommmm?”

Me- “You have got to be kidding me.”

N- “Can you come over? I think I need to go to the hospital.”

I had Andrea retrieve N and soon I had a living room full of sick people again. They have all recovered now and no one actually needed to go to the hospital. The end.

Now for something amusing. If you haven’t visited “Texts From Last Night” you need to. It is funny, funny stuff. Here are a few of my favorites:

Just saw a girl leaving CVS on her bike with a case of beer. She tried to ride one handed with the case under her other arm and fell over off the sidewalk. I'm glad to see someone else's life is a bigger joke than mine.

everyday i am more and more thankful i can still check the no box for "have you ever been convicted of a felony?" on applications

We tried to play doctor all sexually then he was taking down my 'symptoms' I said I needed to puke he thought it was part of the game

I know it may not be fiscally responsible to pregame fifty cent night, but I'm gonna go ahead and do it anyway.

My ferret is drunk. Someone told me you'd know what to do?

I don't know where I am but there are firefighters

I just made out with a girl with a life jacket on wtf is going on

you kept making us tell you how cute you looked in your new outfit, even after you threw up all over it

Is a Chipotle burrito an acceptable "sorry I ran over your cat" gift?

Yeah, I was googling pictures of sharks, and I accidentally typed "shart." Huge mistake.

So not only just find my adoption papers that I didnt know about in my parents house, but they say "child shows some signs of mental retardation".

What part of "waking up in the crawl space of my house with a raccoon" sounds like a good night to you?

what do 4 police cars, 1 ambulence, and 2 fire truycks have in common?.... My driveway

I accidently shit my pants. So I tried to throw my underwear in their lake, but they floated. So in the middle of the night, I got into the paddle boat and had to throw a rock on top of them so they would sink. Next time, I just won't shit myself.

i ate 2 chicken nuggets and puked out 5. that doesn't even make mathematical sense

(404):
what's for breakfast?
(678):
Advil and throwup

He looked way older than 15. He probably thought that since I have braces I was 15. Fuck. The 6 year age gap is never to be spoken about. Especially because what happened constitutes as illegal.

Lessons in Electricity

Let’s start this off by explaining that I’m not a big bread fan. I hate the mess of toasters and all the crumbs that come from them. Several years ago after cleaning up crumbs yet again from someone else’s toast mess, I threw the toaster in the trash. Now the bread lovers in the house are forced to make toast in the counter-top convection oven ,which does double duty as a toaster oven. But toasters came up in a recent conversation with Katie.

We have a small space heater that we use in the bathroom during the winter. The upstairs bathroom is a little drafty and we have one of those gigantic pedestal bath tubs that maintains a temperature somewhere in the range of a frozen side of beef. The only way to take a bath without suffering hypothermia is to pre-heat the bathroom.

I’m very careful about letting the girls be in there with the heater plugged in. It’s far enough away that there isn’t a danger of it even reaching the tub but kids tend to splash. Katie was in the bath tub when I decided that I better make sure she was clear about water not getting anywhere near the space heater.

Me- “Ok, Katie, you need to be really careful. The heater is plugged in and we can’t have any water near it. No splashing. All the water has to stay in the tub. Ok?”

Katie- “Why?”

Me- “Because the heater is plugged in and it would be really bad. You could get hurt.”

Katie- “How?”

Me- “The heater is electrical. That means there is electricity in it. Water does not go with electricity. Ever.”

Katie- “Why? What would happen?”

Me- “You could get zapped. It could really hurt you.”

Katie- “But how?”

Me- “Ok, for example, if someone was taking a bath and a toaster that was plugged in fell into the water, it would kill them.”

Katie- “But we don’t even have a toaster.”

Me- “And that is exactly why. They’re dangerous.”

Good Lord, They're Sick again...

I have three sick kids and now I have a cold, again. I have taquito smeared on my leg from Marin’s lunch and a little while ago she actually blew her nose on my sweater. The only thing that is shocking about any of that is that I haven’t even bothered to change my clothes. I mean, why bother? For all practical purposes I’m essentially living with Typhoid Mary. Correction, Typhoid Marys…..

Claire and Marin had a doctor’s appointment a few days ago. They were both coughing and wheezing. Their doctor prescribed steroids and antibiotics for both. Claire is now old enough that she can manage a pill which is handy given the fact that it would be easier to give a wolverine liquid medicine.

Marin was prescribed liquid Decadron rather than the liquid Prelone that has a reputation for tasting horrible. They both got liquid antibiotics.

After filling the prescriptions, I went home and prepared doses. I noticed with relief that the antibiotic actually smelled good, like cherries. The last time we had one it smelled so bad that I could hardly stand to pour it. At this point I’m thinking I’m home free.

Me- “Ok, Claire, take this pill.” She complied with no whining or complaining. I’m now so confident that I’m getting a little cocky as I hand her the cup of pink liquid.

Claire, looking at me positively outraged, demanding- “What’s THIS?”

Me, trying to regroup and remain positive- “It’s your antibiotic. It smells really good.”

Claire- “Are you crazy? I’m not drinking that.”

Me- “Yes, I’m afraid you are.”

Claire, having a full-blown melt-down- “Why? I hate it! It’s that stuff that tastes awful and you promised that I didn’t have to take it anymore!”

Me- “It’s not that stuff. That’s the Prelone and you took a pill instead, remember? This is just your antibiotic and it smells really good. Now drink it.”

Claire finally relented and drank it then accused me of being a liar.

Claire- “You lied to me! It was that stuff that tastes awful!”

Me- “No, Claire. It was just the antibiotic.”

Claire, still furious- “Well, it tastes like you were lying to me!”

Conversation with Claire

I mentioned my Grandma when we were talking about Claire’s new paint by number.

Me- “I used to do those at my Grandma’s house when I was little.”

Claire- “Oh, you did? She passed, didn’t she?”

Me- "Yes, she did.”

Claire- “What happened?”

Me- “Well she was just old."

Claire- “So did she choke?”

Me- “No. Her heart just stopped.”

Claire- “That happens to a lot of people. Why?”

Me- “Well, she was just old. She was ready to go."

Claire- “You mean she was ready to die? How could that happen?”

Me- “She used to tell me that she was just tired.”

Claire- “Well, why didn’t she just take a nap?”

Continuing the Cat Theme.....

A few says ago I went over to my friend Andrea’s house. It was pretty cold that night so I ran for the door leaving Andrea to fend for herself. She told me to go in ahead of her so I did. I saw her friend/boyfriend/roommate/whatever, John, sitting on the couch and animals everywhere.

There main animal population is currently one cat and three dogs. Old dogs. Old dogs that go to the vet a lot and take regular medications. Andrea literally has IV fluids in her living room for her dog. Another one is deaf and has joint issues. The third one is so short and fat that she looks like a mobile foot stool. Well, a really hairy foot stool.

After greeting at least two out of the three (it might have been all three but a couple of them look a like, so who knows?) we walked past the menagerie in the living room so that Andrea could show me the birds John had given her. Because, clearly, she needed five more pets.

Andrea’s cat followed, hoping to eat Andrea’s new friends. He hurled himself at the cage.

Andrea- “He really likes the birds.”

Me- “So I see. Good lord, his testicles are even bigger and more disgusting that the last time I was here.”

Andrea- “I know. I need to get him neutered.”

On the drive back to my house Andrea brought up John.

Andrea- “That was pretty funny how you startled John when you walked in. You were lucky he didn’t have a gun.

Me- “Well, I guess that would be startling to have someone just walk in.”

Andrea- “Yeah. You were really lucky he wasn’t sitting there in his underwear.”

Me- “Yeah. It was disgusting enough to have to see your cat’s testicles.”

Sometimes You Just Have to Draw the Line...

Overheard in my house:

C, talking to Claire and Katie- "If you two can’t play by the rules, then I’m not going to play store with you anymore."

I Seriously Hope This Passes Before Her Teen Years.....

Marin is still taking all of her clothes off in her bed. She was better for a while but now that she is seriously working on the potty training it seems that she can’t tolerate a wet diaper. Or a slightly damp diaper for that matter. So, she simply throws everything over the side.

A couple of nights ago Marin was yelling for me an hour after I had put her to bed. I went to see what she needed and was greeted by a stark naked toddler.

Me- “Marin, what happened?”

Marin- “I wet.”

I got her cleaned up, took her to go potty and then into fresh jammies. Then I started with the mandatory lecture.

Me- “You need to leave your clothes on. Don’t take any clothes off. You leave your pants on. Ok?”

Marin- “Ok.”

Twenty minutes later Marin was again yelling. I walked into her room and discovered her naked. Before I had a chance to say anything, Marin looked at me, frowned and said, “I not happy you!”

Inappropriate Parenting- part 483

This is how a typical morning with Marin, the high-maintenance toddler, begins.

Marin- “Go potty! Where doggy? Fix it for me, warm ba-ba!”

Me- “Hang on. One thing at a time. I’m working on it.”

But what I really want to say is, “You ain’t got no problems, Jules. I’m on the motherfucker."

The Crazy and the Crazy Killers

I haven’t written about my sister for a while but it’s not because she isn’t still interesting. Or embarrassing. It’s more that I just get tired of the crazy and sometimes writing about it starts to feel like crazy overload. Lynne was have trouble with the police recently and was calling me all the time to tell me about it. She would complain that they were always driving by and watching her. I doubt that was the paranoia. I think that if they have any idea at all it would behoove them to keep an eye on her.

She was bothering neighbors this year and evidently a couple of them actually turned her in. One neighbor saw my dad outside and told him that he needed to do something about her. That brings me back to something that really pisses me off. People always seem to have this idea that the family just doesn’t know or want to be bothered. The reality is that you can be pretty crazy and there is nothing that anyone can do to help. If you’re new here, please check out a few of these stories to get an idea of the frustration involved in trying to get help for a mentally ill family member. Here's a good one.

Lynne’s harassment of the neighbor’s continued and the police continued driving by. Then they stepped it up a notch and started knocking on her door. Which in turn stepped up the crazy phone calls to my house.

Lynne- “I don’t know what those people want but they were at the door.”

Me- “What people?”

Lynne- “The police.”

Me- “Didn’t you answer the door?”

Lynne- “Hell, no, I didn’t answer the door! For all I know, they might want to haul me off.”

Me- “So you just pretended not to be home? Like Grandma used to do when we had to play the “hiding game” when the Jehovah’s Witnesses were in the neighborhood?”

Lynne, sounding smug.- “Yep.”

A few days later there was another frantic call.

Lynne- “Jesus Christ, they were here again!”

Me- “Huh? The police?

Lynne- “Yes, those bastards.”

Me- “Well, what did they want?”

Lynne- “I don’t know! I didn’t answer the door. Do you think I’m crazy or something? I just know that I didn’t call them and I don’t want any part of it.”

Me- “Well, if you don’t answer the door then how are you going to find out what they want?”

Lynne, screeching- “I don’t give a fuck what they want! I just climbed out my bedroom window for Christ’s sake!”

I couldn’t respond for a while because I was laughing too hard. They eventually caught up with her outside and just advised her to leave the neighbors alone.

My mom called a few days ago to tell me that there were a couple of murderers loose in Lynne’s small town.

Mom- “It was in the paper. They beat some guy to death and they haven’t found them yet. I’m not telling Lynne.”

I thought that was pretty funny but still, I thought maybe she should have a head’s up on actual killers loose in town, as opposed to the regular thing where she just thinks the neighbors are trying to kill her.

Just to Explain, She Learned it From Her Big Brothers...

Marin still has an abnormal interest in bathing. Yesterday she was throwing things in the bath and making a mess so I made her leave the room.

Me- “Ok, that’s enough. You’re done. Go downstairs.”

Marin walked out but I heard her say, “Mommy, asshole.” (She says “a-ole” but it’s pretty clear what she’s saying.)

I ignored it but the Katie came running to report Marin.

Katie- “Uh-oh! Marin said the “A” word!”

Marin didn’t deny it and confessed instead- “I say it, “A” word.”

This morning she was over the side and in the bathtub with me before I had a chance to object.

Me- “I guess you’re taking a bath with me.”

Marin- “Yeah.”

We had a few moments of peace before Marin announced, “I peed!” I briefly toyed with the idea of calling her an asshole but elected not to.

Shhhh! Don't Tell PETA....

Things Marin has said today- “You cute, Mommy!” “I love you much!” and when I picked her up to take her for a nap, “You a hebby kid.”

The last few days when I haven’t been busy with kids, I have been on a mission to rid the house of the mice that recently moved in. I first started hearing little noises in my bedroom and eventually figured out that it was a mouse. I find it difficult to sleep with the knowledge that there is a rodent prowling around in my room. I got C to put two traps in there and hoped that would be the end of it. After a few days of checking and re-checking the live traps, I discovered that there was no bait in them. C claimed that they must have eaten it but I saw no evidence of peanut butter residue. I fixed the traps with peanut butter and waited.

While I was patiently waiting for the mouse to climb in to the humane trap, I began to become discouraged. There was a downstairs mouse as well by this time. I can hear the mouse at night when I am sitting at my desk. I honestly wonder where the expression “quiet as a mouse” comes from. I have no trouble hearing the mouse scurrying about on the lookout for discarded remnants of Cheetos.

I have taken to sitting with my feet up on my desk to prevent the possibility of a mouse running up my leg. People like to say, “Oh, they are more afraid of you…” etc. but I don’t even want to hear that. I have encountered a few mice before and realize that if nothing else, they are unpredictable and seem uncertain of which direction to go. I have had a mouse run straight at me and I have seen one jump straight up in the air. It’s alarming, at the very least.

Last year my friend Ann recounted a mouse incident at her house. I can still remember the conversation.

Ann- “You are not going to believe this but I had a mouse in my hand!”

Me- “What? Are you kidding?”

Ann- “No, I’m not kidding.”

Me, disgusted yet still fascinated- “What happened?”

Ann- “I reached the scoop into the dog food bag and when I pulled it out there was a mouse in my hand.”

Me- “Oh, my God! What did you do?”

Ann- “What do you think? I screamed and threw it. I think I need to invest in Rubbermaid.”

Of course I laughed and laughed at Ann’s mouse horror story much like I did when a neighbor encountered a mouse in my presence. The neighbor’s cat had left the mouse on her front porch, contributing to feeding the family, as some cats like to do.

The neighbor is not a fan of mice but braver than most women. She picked the mouse up by the tail and threw it in the yard. She noticed signs of movement and went over for a closer look. That turned out to be a mistake that she would live to regret. Just as she leaned over to look, the mouse made a full recovery from his apparent death. The mouse promptly ran straight up her pants leg. The neighbor began screaming while engaging in a choreiform-like dance. I suppose, in retrospect, maybe I should have done something to help, given that the poor women had a mouse in her pants. Instead, I laughed and laughed until I had tears rolling down my cheeks. I think it is safe to say that I have earned some bad mouse karma that day.

The mouse battle continues and the old-fashioned snap traps have been added to the arsenal. The night before last I heard a loud “pop” that awakened me from my slumber. I turned on a light and instinctively grabbed a Mag-light as well. I’m not sure what I planned on doing with that but when battling rodents one must be prepared.

I saw that a mouse had been caught in the trap but was not yet dead. He didn’t even appear close to dead really, just stuck and wild-eyed. He was determined to escape the trap and used his body weight to flip the trap over repeatedly. I went to get C since, as you might have guessed by this point in the story, I’m afraid of mice. C refused to help me and suggested I remove it myself. I toyed with the idea of getting the salad tongs but hated the idea of risking the mouse freeing himself while he was dangling near my legs. I also thought that I would really hate to have to throw out a perfectly good pair of tongs. The tongs would have to have been disposed of because it would be forever burned into my memory that they were now “the mouse tongs”.

I went back over to once again evaluate and re-group. I felt sorry for the mouse, it was a pitiful sight but I also realized that he was very determined to escape. I got the fire extinguisher and balanced it on the edge of the trap to prevent any further flipping. Then I went back to bed. I know that sounds cold but I thought that a traumatized mouse that had just escaped a trap would be crazier than a regular unpredictable mouse. I just didn’t want to wake up to an angry mouse exacting his revenge by chewing my ear off in the night. The next day I convinced Andrea to dispose of the body. I supplied the latex gloves. Her only condition was that the trap was going in the trash as well. Everyone has their limits.

The downstairs mouse continues to roam around nightly with free reign of the house. He has skillfully evaded all traps. A couple of nights ago I was sitting at my desk talking to Claire. I had just seen the mouse and of course I had my feet up and on high-alert. The mouse then darted across the room full-throttle causing me to scream. That in turn caused Claire to scream while simultaneously jumping up in the air and launching herself into my lap, backwards. It was a very fluid movement as if we had practiced this maneuver in anticipation of such an event. Claire isn’t really afraid of mice. She claims that she thinks they are cute. I’m just not buying her bravado after that particular display.

If the traps don’t work any time soon, I’ll be the one walking around the house in the hip-waders.

My Dad + Wiring = Fire

Years ago when I was a little kid, my mom saw a stove that she wanted to buy. It was very expensive and it wasn’t within the family budget. My mom didn’t give up but instead decided that we were old enough that she could abandon us and return to the work force. She saved and bought a Litton Micro-matic in the 1970’s.

I still remember the new stove arriving and how different it looked from the old gas stove. It had a smooth glass top that would glow orange under the little markings that labeled the area for the burners. The best part was that it combined a microwave with a traditional oven. We could use the microwave to reheat or it could be set to microwave and bake at the same time. My mom could roast a turkey faster than anyone else on the block.

In the days before microwaves were the norm, this was pretty exciting stuff.

That Litton oven lasted for over thirty-five years before quitting for good. My dad found a nice replacement and put it in last weekend. The replacement is a gas convection oven. The gas line had been taken out when the Litton went in so my dad ran a new gas line. My sister lives in the house with my dad and she was really nervous about the gas. She called me to share her concerns.

Lynne- "You know how he does things. Remember the last time he had to light the furnace and he got those burns? I remember when that happened to Grandma and I think her dress was on fire. Like that time I caught my dress on fire..."

We have already established that my sister tends to be a little wacky but when it comes to my dad and things that can catch fire, well, she kind of has reason to be fearful.

My dad is one of those guys that can fix anything. He can fix cars, build anything and has the tools to prove it. I grew up with the idea that was how all men were. I learned that wasn't true. When I ask C to fix something in the house it doesn't work the way it does with my dad. What C does is call me over to the area needing the repair and then try to explain to me why it can't be fixed. Not just by him but by anyone because it is physically impossible to fix.

When I was eight months pregnant with Marin, I decided that I had to update the downstairs bathroom. I painted the bathroom. My dad came and took out the old toilet, then cut and installed the ceramic tile. He had to leave before the grout was in so that left me to do that job. I had never mixed grout before so my dad talked me through it on the phone. As I was mixing the grout C came in to critique my technique. He explained that it was too thick and I ignored him. My position is that if you aren't helping then you should just shut your pie hole. I managed to grout and seal the bathroom floor all by myself at eight months pregnant. The thing that I didn't anticipate was that the bathroom door would no longer fit due to the increased height of the flooring.

After I finished grouting, I asked C to put the bathroom door back on the hinges. He marched me over to show me why that wouldn't work. I suggested that the door would have to be cut at the bottom. C responded with more reasons why that wouldn't work either and put the door out on the back porch. A week later the door was still on the back porch. C didn't seem to think that it was that much of an inconvenience to use the upstairs bathroom. Which brings us back to the fact that I was eight months pregnant. Walking upstairs one hundred times a day was not working for me. My friend Andrea and I came up with a plan.

We borrowed a power saw from Dave. Dave asked if we were certain that we knew what we were doing and we assured him that we did. We didn't.

We waited for C to leave for a few hours so he couldn't put a stop to our plan and we started measuring. We carefully measured and marked the door. Then we bickered about who was going to have to use the saw. Andrea lost because I'm more afraid of power tools than she is. Plus I had the pregnancy card. Then we couldn't get the saw turned on and had to call Dave. Dave said he would come over and show us how it worked.

Once he was here he asked if we wanted him to go ahead and cut it. We were relieved.

Dave- "Now are you sure you measured it right?"

Andrea- "Yes. We measured it twice."

Me- "Yeah. We measured it twice and we both checked it. We're positive."

Dave made the cut and then left Andrea and me to put it back on the hinges. That's when we discovered that we had marked the wrong end of the door.

This is why I have to get my dad to help. I no longer have clearance for projects that require more than duct tape. Or Elmer's glue.

My dad is a perfectionist when working for other people. He’s a contractor and most people can’t work for him for long before he screams at them for being incompetent and runs them off the job. But when he is doing things for family it is a whole different story. Half-assed is good enough.

When we first moved into our current house, my dad came and helped with a lot of projects. I hired a handy man to put up some ceiling fans. The handy man was pretty old and not very fast but he did get several fans installed. There were a couple of fans that were beyond what he was comfortable with because they had remote controls. My dad got the job.

I remember my dad opening the box and announcing that we didn’t need those remotes anyway and tossing them aside. Evidently the wiring is a bit more complicated and he didn’t want to read the instructions. One of the ceiling fans is now off balance and can only be used on low because of the rattling. It can’t be balanced because my dad threw that stuff out, along with the remotes. You get what you pay for I guess.

My dad has helped with many other things though and saved us a ton of money. But sometimes things are a little off. The garage had to have a new door in order to be usable. We have a very large garage that also has inside stairs leading to a second floor storage area. The garage job cost over two thousand dollars. We hired someone that quoted half that to do the job. The guy that did it had to install some kind of huge beam under the second story and that’s why it ended up being twice the price. When he put the beam in he failed to measure where the garage door opener needed to be and as a result the opener couldn’t be installed. I was unhappy and called my dad to tell him what happened. This is how the conversation went.

Me- “The beam is in the way of where the track needs to run. We can’t get the garage door opener installed now. I am so mad. I’m going to call that guy and make him come move that beam. Two thousand dollars and I have to open the garage door myself? I don't think so.”

Dad- “Ain’t no big deal. I’ll take care of it.”

Me- “But he was paid to do it right.”

Dad- “Don’t call him. He’s a good old boy. I’ll fix it.”

Me- “Well, ok. But I still want to call.”

My dad kept his word and came over to fix it. Instead of the beam being moved he cut a hole in the floor of the second story. Now when I go get Christmas paper out of the garage I have to be very careful to make sure I don’t fall in the hole and land on the lawn mower. But the door works fine.

My dad has done some wiring in my house. An electrician would have charged four thousand for the job my dad did for us. My dad is competent but we’re back to cutting corners for family. I remember when he was in the attic running some wire. I heard a loud "pop" in one of the bedrooms. I was afraid he had killed himself in the attic. I was really worried because the attic is accessible through a trap door in a bathroom and I didn’t really want to go in after him. I think it's probably really dirty up there and there are probably spiders.

I yelled to confirm that he was still among the living.

“Are you ok?”

“Huh?”

“Are you ok? I heard a loud pop!”

“I’m fine. I didn’t hear anything.”

We later discovered a melted surge protector and an area with charred carpeting in the bedroom with the pop. I didn’t bother telling my dad because I knew he would just say it wasn’t anything.

The next summer one of the home repairs was installing a new pump in our well in the back yard. There are several houses in our neighborhood that have wells. I wanted it working for the garden since it’s convenient and free water. My dad and William pulled out the old pump and replaced it with a new one. It had been some time since the well had been working and for some reason there was no longer any power to it. My dad being the can-do guy he is, went and rented a trencher at a local business, and prepared to run an electrical line to the well.

C and I were both working that day so we left the girls in the house with Andrea to supervise. I remember coming home and Andrea telling me all about the work being done in the yard.

Andrea- “I was in the living room watching. He’s really fast on that trencher thing.”

Me- “Oh yeah?”

Andrea- “Yeah. But then when your dad was doing something with wires all of a sudden there was fire. There were flames shooting up the side of the house right by the window.”

Me- “Oh my God!”

Andrea- “I know. I was getting ready to call 911 but then he put it out with the hose.”

Me- “Let me guess. Then he said ‘ain’t no big deal’?”

Andrea- “Yep.”

Me- “Man, every time he does stuff with wiring there’s fire.”

Andrea- “Tell me about it.”

I saved a lot of money having my dad do the wiring but invested more in smoke alarms and fire extinguishers that what others might think necessary. I'm a little worried that some of the wiring might be held together with duct tape…

Texting (All the Cool Kids are Doing it...)

Andrea is leaving for an exotic Carribean vacation tomorrow, which means that I'm stuck taking care of her cat. She sent me a text to thank me for my pet care services.

Andrea- Also, Thanks SOOOO much!!! Do you want me to bring you anything?

Me- How about a t-shirt that says "I took care of your fucking cat for 10 days and all I got was this lousy t-shirt"....

A couple of days ago I texted my friend Lori to complain/whine about my ear infection.

Lori- One of my friends had an ear infection for days. Took antibiotics and now has a yeast infection/fungus in her ear. Yuck!

Me- Probiotic with antibiotic will prevent most of that.

Lori- I bought her some Vagisil for her ear.

Me- Helpful...

Lori- That's what friends are for. I even convinced her that the fish smell in her ear wasn't that noticable...

Halloween Conversations

Prior to trick-or-treating:

Me- “You need a jacket.”
Claire- “Ok, but it can’t be the brown one.”
Me- “Why not?”
Claire- “Because I had some tomatoes in my pocket and they got kind of squished.”
Katie- “Me too!”

Post trick-or-treating:

Marin- “I yike it, candy!”
