Dave Briefly Toys With the Idea of Judaism

I realized today that my friend Dave has not made an appearance here for quite some time. What follows is a conversation with Dave from earlier today. This is the one where he realizes that he can't be Jewish, at least not for more than a day and a half. You can find more of Dave here, here or here.

“I did some reading about different religions and I think that there are a lot of things about the Jewish religion that make sense.”

“Yeah, except you couldn’t eat cheeseburgers.”

“They can't have cheeseburgers?"

"Nope."

"Why not?”

“Well, if you’re Orthodox, you can’t combine meat with dairy. You’re not even supposed to use the same dishes.”

“Why can’t you?”

“Because you aren’t supposed to serve meat with the mother’s milk. It’s considered a sin or something.”

“Well, that doesn’t make any sense. Shouldn’t a sin just be for when someone gets hurt?”

I wanted to be Jewish after reading the "All of a kind family" series by Sydney Taylor.

I was totally envious of Purim.

Raised as a Jew, and later converting to Christianity, I've known plenty of Jews who violate the Kosher laws. I remember when my mother "fell away" from the faith: we had gone to synogog that morning. We had been going for several years and she still hadn't met that "nice Jewish husband" she had been hoping to meet when she converted to Judiasm; we kids were eating M&Ms while she fried up a whole pound of delicious bacon. We had never had it before, and it was so good. We started having bacon fests rather than Sabbaths from that time on.
